History

The Spellman Amphitheater is named in honor of Mick Spellman, a significant local figure and benefactor to the City of Forney. Born in Forney on December 30, 1913, Mick Spellman was a graduate of Forney’s Lewis High School and the University of Texas. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he had a 42-year career with Southern Gas Company before retiring in 1977.

His generous contributions to the community included not only the amphitheater but also the renovation of Latimer Playground at Mulberry Park and the construction of the Mick Spellman Park Building at Forney Community Park. The Spellman legacy in Forney extends beyond the amphitheater, as evidenced by the Spellman Museum of Forney History, which houses artifacts and exhibits detailing the area’s rich history.
